During 2001-2003, the University of Missouri – Columbia contracted Foliotek to develop three electronic portfolio management systems for three school programs. Each program had varied system requirements. The individual program requirements were so different it would have seemed impossible to build one program with characteristics to fit all three educational programs.
That did not stop our design team from proposing the creation of a single software “package” that would have a fundamental adaptive infrastructure. Once complete, this proposed package would be configured during a consultation interview with each educational program to determine their system’s final structure, user-interface terminology, data tracking, data reporting, organization, and evaluation settings.
Interviews with dozens of portfolio experts from other schools convinced us that an adaptive software approach would be the ideal solution for our portfolio/assessment problem. The fact that each college has its own unique history, values, conceptual framework, and assessment goals impressed us with the need for schools to have a custom-fit application to manage their portfolio and assessment process.
Our plan to create an adaptive portfolio management system for three school programs grew into a plan to revolutionize the electronic portfolio management and assessment process of schools nationally. We enlisted the expertise of more than 20 portfolio coordinators who assisted with needs analysis, blueprint design, and beta testing of this system. With their help and our development effort, Foliotek became a reality.
